The Busiest Shopping Street in Hiroshima Downtown
Hondori, located in the middle of Hiroshima City, is one of the most well-known attractions in the Chugoku/Shikoku area. The arcade, which stretches 577m from east to west, features approximately 200 stores, including shops popular with young people, large-scale home electronics shops, restaurants, and more. There are lots of shops around Hondori as well, and a substantial amount of public transport, so on the weekends around 100,000 people visit per day.
In the Edo period, Hondori was the part of Sangoku Street (Sanyodo), which passed by Hiroshima Castle, so there are 9 stone tablets along the street that show the old streets name, such as Harimaya Street, Toyoko Street, and Kawaya Street. During WWII, althogh it was heavily damaged by the atomic bomb, 9 years later in 1954, an arcade was built and it was reconstructed. It went on to become the most popular street in the entire Shikoku/Chugoku region.
Enjoy at Hondori Sightseeing Spots
At Hondori, you can enjoy Hiroshima’s unique shops all in one place. Now I’ll break down the stores popular with international travellers into the 3 categories of “Relax”,” Learn” and “Enjoy”.
Relax at Cat Cafe “Coorikuya”
One of Japan’s popular cat cafes has opened at Hondori! The store is based around a blend of Japanese and Western styles, and has a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy spending time with the cats. Although drinks are included in the fee, there’s a separate charge for cat treats, so check before you buy.
You can play with the cats on the tatami mat, and relieve the fatigue you’ve built up on your trip, so it’s very popular with international tourists as well. It has projection mapping, which is rare in a cat cafe, and the way the cats react to the displays on the ground is very cute.

Eel and oyster are Hiroshima specialties, and at Tsukiakari (Moonlight), you can enjoy the seafood of Hiroshima to your heart’s content. Their special Eel Rice is a delicious dish that consists of rice cooked in broth taken from eels, and covered in their homemade sauce. As mentioned in the caption on the photo, the tender, thin-skinned Setouchi eel is slowly cooked to release the flavor and fragrance, and will be sure to give you an appetite. They also have Eel Rice bento boxes, which would be good to eat at the neighboring Peace Memorial Park.

They have a wide variety of products showcasing the best parts of Hiroshima Prefecture, and are loved by the locals as well. They also have demonstrations every 2 weeks where you can get a special original product made. In addition to the goods for sale, they also have a tourism information counter, which has all the information you need to know about Hiroshima.
Lemons grown in Hiroshima Prefecture make up over half of all lemons grown in Japan. Hiyashiame, a popular drink here, uses these Setoda lemons alongside ginger. It has fans around the country, with many repeat customers buying it by the case. It’s good for when you’re feeling tired on your journey, have a cold, or are fatigued by the heat.
