Surrounded by a river, the massive Peace Memorial Park is a famous sightseeing place in Hiroshima. This park, built near the epicenter of the A-bomb strike in a prayer for world peace, is always filled with sightseeing tourists. In this article, I’ll introduce some of Peace Memorial Park’s key spots and nearby cafes, to make it easier for you to enjoy your walk.

Peace Memorial Park Has a Lot of Spots to Visit

Within the large grounds of Peace Memorial Park, there are a lot of places to see. In particular, the memorial cenotaph for the A-Bomb victims is the city’s peace memorial, and was built with the idea of protecting the souls of the A-bomb victims from the rain. The stone building in the center has a list of the victims’ names, which is still being added to today.

The peace bell shown here is a symbol of peace constructed in 1964, and engraved into it is a map of the world without country borders. There are lots of other places to see at the park as well, so take some time to walk around when you’re there.

See the Bombed Buildings

There are several parasol trees and buildings that were hit by the A-bomb. The most famous of these is the rest house. It was built in 1929, and was hit from close range, only 170 meters away from the epicenter of the atomic bomb blast. It was completely burnt down except for the basement, but as it was built with reinforced concrete, the basic structure is still intact. (As of 2018 it is closed for renovations, which are scheduled to finish in 2019.)

Tourist Information Center Near the Park

Tourist Information Center run by Hiroshima city is usually located inside the rest house, but since that’s under renovation, it’s currently located to the west of the Children of the A-Bomb Statue. It has sightseeing information, brochures, and a vending machine, so it’s a good place to take a break!
