If you like arts, maybe you have visited well-known art museums such as the Louvre Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam… The museum we will introduce here is not as big, and does not exhibit famous works such as “Mona Lisa”. However, this museum in a small town has plenty of charm. Here we will introduce “Fukuyama Museum of Art”.

About the Fukuyama Museum of Art

Fukuyama Museum of Art is a modern architectural art museum located in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Based on the five collection objectives:

  • Artists’ work related to the wide area municipality of Fukuyama and Fuchu
  • Artists’ work related to the Setouchi area
  • Works of modern and contemporary Japanese art
  • Works of modern and contemporary European art centered around Italy
  • Artists’ works of young and medium-level artists in various fields who are expected to play a leading role in the art world of the future

The collection has been built up, and many works are currently exhibited. In addition, because the museum is at the base of the Fukuyama Castle Tower, the castle tower can be seen as part of the background, creating a unique landscape.

Highlights of  the Fukuyama Museum of Art?

Well then, what is actually exhibited at the Fukuyama Museum of Art? At the Fukuyama Museum of Art, there are standard exhibits, exhibits of works they own, unclassified works, and limited-time special exhibits on display. In the standard exhibits, as mentioned previously, many works related to the Setouchi area are displayed, and you can see works that you cannot see very often in Europe and elsewhere.

In the special exhibits, there are various offerings, from works of famous artists such as Picasso and Michelangelo to photographs of cats. As these special exhibits are different depending on when you visit, we recommend that you look up what kind of exhibition will be held before you come. Also, outdoor monuments are set up outside the museum, making for good conditions for pictures that match the surrounding background. When you visit, please also take note of this spot.

Because the Fukuyama Museum of Art is close to the station, it is easy to access and you can enjoy artwork at a relaxed pace in a quiet atmosphere, so we highly recommend it. In addition, the Fukuyama Castle, Fukuyama Museum of Calligraphy, etc. are located near the Fukuyama Museum of Art as well, so there is plenty to enjoy just by walking in the area. It is an art museum in a small town, but sometimes it is good to appreciate artwork thoroughly.
