Miyajima, often called “The Island of Gods.” Beginning with Itsukushima Shrine, there are many sightseeing spots to explore, and the island bustles with visitors all year round. But, Miyajima has more to offer than just sightseeing. There are also many spaces where you can experience and get a feel for the local culture. Here, I’d like to tell you all about the services you can experience and facilities in Miyajima!

Ways to Enjoy Miyajima Other Than Food and Sightseeing

When it comes to enjoying yourself in Miyajima, many people probably think of sightseeing at Itsukushima Shrine, Daisho-in, and other places, or perhaps of oysters and other foods. If you come all the way to visit this island, you should also look into traditional cultural experiences!

At certain spaces, you can experience hand cooking Momiji Manju, making wooden rice scoops, wearing Japanese clothes, tea ceremonies, and more. There are many hands-on events for each of the four seasons! For people who want to take all of here, how about visiting some of these places?

Rice Scoop Making

One of Miyajima’s famous local products is the rice scoop. Souvenir shops on this island are full of rice scoops, which have long been popular as bringers of good fortune.  You can actually experience making one with a branding iron! And there is even a small rice scoop strap which you can imprint a picture specially for you. It’s a great way to turn your trip memories into something that will last.

Miyajima Handmade Studio

For an authentic experience at a reasonable price of ¥400, I recommend “Miyajiman Workshop” (Miyajima Traditional Craft Center). You can make a one of a kind, authentic rice scoop. Also, if you’d like to make an original rice scoop cell phone strap with a picture imprinted, I recommend Miyajima handmade studio.  The experience time is about eight minutes! Being able to casually join in is one of the charms of the experience.
