The first place you want to go to when visiting Fukuyama is Fukuyama Castle located a 5-minute walk from Fukuyama Station. Though scarred by war, it is a beautiful castle surrounded by flowers and greenery. Right behind it is Fukuju Kaikan, where you can enjoy origami, matcha, samurai cosplay, and other Japanese cultural experiences at “Experience FUKUYAMA”. Here is an introduction to the Fukuyama Castle area, an easy place to visit for many people.

Fukuyama Castle

Fukuyama Castle, built by Tokugawa Ieyasu’s cousin Mizuno Katsunari during the Edo period, is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property, historic site of Japan. It was destroyed once in the Great Fukuyama Air Raid during World War II. However, it was rebuilt and its castle tower now operates as a museum. The museum exhibits armor and documents of that time, as well as historic artifacts of Fukuyama, and the observation deck on the topmost floor commands a wide view of Fukuyama.

Attractions Around Fukuyama Castle

Fukuyama is also famous for its roses. Souvenir shops sell rose-related merchandise such as “Rose flower jam”, “Rose green tea”, “Rose flower bath ingredient” and many other items. The streets of Fukuyama also feature roses in many flower beds. In May, you can enjoy roses in a variety of colors.

Fukuyama Castle is also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot with around 300 cherry trees. During cherry blossom season, the trees are lit up in the evenings, offering a fantastical view of Fukuyama Castle and cherry blossoms.

In autumn, “the Fukuyama Chrysanthemum Exhibition” is held at Fukuyama Castle. The large chrysanthemum flowers made in Fukuyama are truly magnificent and worth seeing.  You are free to wander around and enjoy the gate, the castle walls, and the premises
From Fukuyama Station, turn left toward Fukuyama Castle, climb the stairs, and enter the premises. It has relatively few steps ,and is quite easy to visit and poplar among elderly people.

If you walk behind Fukuyama Castle, you’ll find this curious place!!

Let’s Go to Fukuju Kaikan!

Fukuju Kaikan, located right at the back of Fukuyama Castle, is a building with a wide garden, which is a Tangible Cultural Property, tea ceremony rooms and a western-style building.

It holds civic tea ceremonies, flower arrangement classes for children, and a variety of seasonal events, as well as “Experience FUKUYAMA”, which is an event for international tourists. There is also a cafe called Chadokoro Bara, where you can enjoy lunch and drinks.

This is the west gate of Fukuju Kaikan. The front gate is accessed from the eastern road, but you can also head toward the front gate from here.
