Overview of the Tobishima Kaido
Tobishima Kaido is a cycling route that spans five islands, located in Kure-city, Hiroshima Prefecture. It crosses the Akinada Bridge placed a little to the east of Nigata Station in Kure-city, and continues on to Shimo-kamagari Island. While traveling along the perimeter, you can cycle five islands: Kami-kamagari, Teshima , Osaki Shimojima and Okamura Islands. In crossing bridges, it is a route that allows people to cycle over the sea, and is similar to the “Shimanami Kaido” in this aspect.
The cycling route has a total length of approximately 25 kilometers, and to imagine it, “mini Shimanami Kaido” is the perfect description. There are bicycle rentals on Shimo-kamagari Island, so you can head there empty handed but still enjoy cycling.
The Appeal of the Tobishima Kaido
The appeal of the Tobishima Kaido is that you can cycle along the sea, enjoying the beautiful scenery. Also, there is little traffic making it easy to cycle on. Because the Shimanami Kaido was originally a motorway connecting the Chugoku region and Shikoku, some parts of it may have many cars. On the other hand, there are barely any cars on Tobishima Kaido. In addition, it is not as famous as Shimanami Kido, and is a spot known as a well-kept secret among cyclists.
Sightseeing Spots on the Tobishima Kaido
The entire cycling road spans islands, so there are many swimming areas and camping grounds along the way, and you can enjoy the outdoors. On Kami-kamagari, you can experience squid fishing.
Furthermore, Osaki Shimojima has a history as a flourishing stopover for marine trade during the Edo period, and there is a district where the streets from that period have been preserved. It is a sightseeing spot complete with traveling, sightseeing, and outdoors.
