Gourmet Tour in Miyajima -7 Delicious Street Foods!

It is a sunny day. Visitors are heading from mainland to Miyajima with light steps. Feeling a comfortable breeze on the ferry moving toward the island, the level of excitement rises as I approach closer to The Great Torii and Itsukushima Shrine. Feeling comfortable even in the crowded platform arriving Miyajima with my expectation for the unseen land.
On such a day, I recommend to try “gourmet walk” in which you can enjoy Japanese food culture, in addition to visiting historical heritage such as shrines and temples. Sightseeing requires physical strength, let’s walk around Miyajima while enjoying Japanese cuisine!

Kyushuya -Nigiri Ten
“Kyushuya” is located at the entrance of the bustling Omotesando shopping street. The round and flat “Satsuma age” made with minced fish is famous in Japan. “Nigiri ten” in Miyajima is stick shaped and comes in a skewer, so you can hold it with one hand when you eat.
Since they fry it after receiving the order, you can have it fresh. You might expect crispy texture as it is fried, but it is extremely soft! You can choose from 8 different flavors. The shop owner is charming and creating a good atmosphere.

Marukin Honpo -Gyuman
Miyajima is famous for its conger eel! Anago-meshi, cooked conger eel on rice, is a common menu, but they also have “Anago man” which is a steamed bun with conger eel filling. This is also very tasty, but I highly recommend another great menu at this shop, a beef bun called “Gyuman”.
The filling is made of the highest grade Hiroshima beef, and it taste like “Sukiyaki”! You can enjoy this steamed bun with luxurious filling of beef. It is hard to stop once you start eating! Please enjoy while it is hot. They also have “Yubaman” (steamed bun with tofu skin filling) for vegans.

gelateria BACCANO -Gelato
A gelato shop specializing flavors using the whole fresh ingredients. There are many repeat customers who love their rich flavors. You can choose from colorful 18 flavors that change every season (or by day).
I chose the most popular Hiroshima Lemon flavor, thanks to the advice from the shop owner. I said “wow!” with excitement after tasting the rich flavor that felt as if I had eaten the whole fruit. If you have trouble choosing one flavor, ask the friendly owner!

GEBURA -Hiroshima Lemon Mojito
Refreshing alcoholic drinks are perfect for a hot day. I truly recommend this shop. You can enjoy mojito, rum cider, high ball and beer. Of course they also have non-alcoholic drinks! They offer drinks made with Hiroshima lemon, as well as home made fruits compote such as kiwi, pink grapefruit, strawberry and blueberry.
It is more fun if you take a stroll around Miyajima with a tipsy feeling, but please be careful not to drink too much!

Katsutani Kashipanho -Sandwich Rolls
Sandwich shop with beautiful brush stroke sign. Just one piece made me very full! A fluffy soft bun perfectly complements the flavor of the filling. “Seasonal vegetable eggs” with plenty of vegetables and eggs, and “Hiroshima okonomiyaki” with delicious yakisoba noodles cooked in seasoned sauce are popular.
Of course they also have buns with sweet fillings that are perfect for snacks. The shop is suitable for those who like sweet or savory flavors.

Itsuki Coffee -Coffee
Among many cafes and coffee shops in Miyajima, I recommend this place for coffee! Please visit here when you are in Miyajima. As coffee beans are roasted in Miyajima, they are always fresh. They brew every single cup carefully. Their iconic ice coffee with rich flavor and aroma is great for a hot day, and why not enjoy their latte art on a chilly day? Please enjoy the stylish interior where you can relax and think about the journey you had.

Koyodo -Age Momiji
“Momiji manju tempura” might sound slightly strange but I highly recommend to try this “Age Momiji Manju” in Miyajima. By frying with oil, it is crispy outside and soft inside. Momiji manju becomes even more delicious when it is fried! Even if you are a bit anxious about trying “anko” (sweet bean paste) for the first time, this makes it easier for you to try. They also offer the popular cheese and cream fillings.
