Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki

The Hiroshima style okonomiyaki with full of cabbage, is the quintessence of healthy and filling, cheap Hiroshima gourmet! The crispy soba noodles and the fruity sauce named “otafuku sauce” entice the appetite with their fragrance.

Nagataya is a popular okonomiyaki store among the top rankers in Japan on TripAdvisor close to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

After oysters, Hiroshima’s most famous specialty is “anago-meshi”. This dish said to have originated from fishermen’s meals is now a popular piece of Hiroshima gourmet.
There are many stores serving it throughout the prefecture, but one that you should not miss is Ueno,  a store located at Miyajimaguchi with more than 100 years of history. The soft fish and sweet sauce are a perfect match!

Brothless Tantanmen

A hot blend of spices with slightly sweet minced meat and strong Japanese pepper. The new trend in local cuisine!
The famous store Kunimatsu hoping for customers to enjoy a delicious brothless tantanmen even at home, generously released their recipe, making it into a new Hiroshima specialty.

Musashi Chicken Karaage &  Rice Balls


Hiroshima’s best bento-boxes are made by Musashi! Among the many varieties, the one that the Hiroshima locals love the most is the broiler chicken rice ball. Enjoy a freshly made one, with a steaming rice ball and a perfectly balanced salty plum. The fried broiler meat is also delicious as well.

Chinese Style Noodle


The flat noodles and thick char siu slices, with a strong soy sauce and back meat broth, make for an addictive flavor with a light aftertaste.
Shukaen is a famous store, located in the retro-feeling district of Onomichi. Despite the food being served as soon as one takes a seat, there is always a long line at lunchtime! Those who do not want to wait should get there before opening time, at 11 am, or in the evening.

Hitotsubu no Muscat

Hiroshima’s new popular dessert, Kyorakudo’s “Hitotsubu no Muscat” (Japanese for “one Muscat grape”,) is a summer only sweet product which is also available online. A juicy Muscat grape is carefully wrapped by hand in thin mochi, creating a delicious dessert.

Toyoka is an irresistible pastry, that Hiroshima locals love as well.  The thin crust made of glutinous rice flour is full of red bean paste! It keeps its chewy texture even when chilled, and is delicious when warmed up in the toaster.

Nama Momiji


This new famous Hiroshima dessert is made with glutinous rice flour and normal rice flour, for a chewy, moist texture. Momiji Manju are also very popular, but these are charming many people with their texture too!
